Cookbook Confessions: The Filipino Collection

Stories, Flavours, and Histories That Shape a Cuisine.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through my journey as a chef, it’s that food is never just about what’s on the plate. It carries history, culture, and identity. And when it comes to Filipino cuisine, every dish is a conversation—about migration, colonization, resilience, and celebration.

My love for cookbooks isn’t just about technique; it’s about storytelling. And when I dig into books on Filipino food, language, and history, I find pieces of myself in their pages. Some of these books are straight-up cookbooks—filled with recipes that taste like home. Others explore our history, our folklore, and our language, shaping the broader narrative of what it means to be Filipino.

This collection isn’t exhaustive, but it’s foundational. If you want to deepen your understanding of Filipino cuisine—whether through history, literature, or the food itself—these books are a great place to start.

I want to express a deep thanks to the teams at The Aswang Project and Philippine Books for assistance in the sourcing the rare books in my collection, as well for the ongoing work of making Philippines resources more accessible!

Historical Resources

This list is just the beginning. Filipino cuisine, history, and culture are vast, layered, and ever-evolving—just like my own understanding of them. As I continue to grow my library at home, this collection will expand, and I’ll update this blog to share new discoveries. My goal is to make these resources more accessible, to spark curiosity, and to encourage others to dig deeper into the richness of Filipino identity.

If you have a favourite book on Filipino food, history, or culture that’s not on this list, I’d love to hear about it. After all, the best way to preserve and celebrate our heritage is to keep the conversation going.
